SULAWESI – “Toraja Highlands & Makassar Coast” (7 Days / 6 Nights)

An authentic cultural journey through South Sulawesi — from the vibrant port of Makassar to the misty mountains of Tana Toraja, home to one of Indonesia’s most fascinating ancient cultures.

Starting point: Makassar Airport | Ending point: Makassar Airport

Day 1 – Arrival in Makassar – City Exploration
Arrive at Sultan Hasanuddin Airport and meet your guide. Visit Fort Rotterdam, a well-preserved Dutch fortress, and stroll along Losari Beach for sunset views over the Makassar Strait. Dinner in a seafood restaurant before overnight at your hotel.

Day 2 – Makassar – Rantepao (Toraja Highlands)
Depart early for the scenic drive to Toraja Land (≈ 8 hours). Stop at Puncak Lakawan for coffee with panoramic views of the valleys. Arrive in Rantepao by late afternoon and check into your mountain hotel. Evening at leisure.

Day 3 – South Toraja – Traditional Villages
Visit Lemo with its cliff-side burial caves and rows of wooden tau-tau effigies. Continue to Suaya and Sangalla royal tombs, then enjoy lunch overlooking rice terraces. End the day in Londa Cave and the picturesque Tongkonan houses of Kete Kesu. Overnight in Rantepao.

Day 4 – North Toraja – Markets & Countryside Walk
After breakfast, explore the lively Rantepao Market (subject to day) where locals trade buffaloes and handicrafts. Continue to Batutumonga for a gentle walk among rice fields and coffee farms with views of Mount Sesean. Return to hotel in the afternoon.

Day 5 – Cultural Encounter & Local Life
Spend the day discovering Toraja’s daily life. Visit weaving centers, coffee plantations, and small schools supported by local communities. If available, witness a traditional funeral or ceremony (a unique cultural experience). Evening free.

Day 6 – Rantepao – Makassar
Return to Makassar with lunch en route. Stop at local villages and rice-field viewpoints along the way. Check in to your hotel near the coast and relax after the long journey.

Day 7 – Departure from Makassar
Depending on flight schedule, optional visit to Paotere Harbor to see traditional Phinisi boats before transfer to the airport.
